What is Ocean?
Ocean is a referral management platform for the primary care sector. It directly integrates to most EMRs that physicians use every day such as PS Suite, Accuro and Meditech. Ocean’s universal, platform-wide healthmap directory makes it easy for clinicians to find services and send patient referrals to specialists, diagnostic imaging like x-rays and MRIs, and community services. Patient information flows directly from the integrated EMR into the referral form provided in Ocean. Providers that use Ocean to receive referrals usually receive most of their referrals from primary care or other clinical settings like hospitals, with very little focus on receiving referrals from the public or informal caregivers.
What is Caredove?
Caredove is a referral management platform for the home and community care sector, focusing on improving access to seniors, mental health and children’s development services. Often, these organizations receive referrals from a wide variety of places, with only about 10% arriving from primary care. Caredove helps community organizations manage inbound referrals from all sources–public websites, phone calls, or external systems like Ocean–and streamlines them into a single and secure referral inbox.

A hospital or primary care team finds your service through Ocean’s interface and initiates a referral. The referral form is automatically prefilled with the patient’s information, directly from the connected EMR or HIS.

The referral lands instantly in your Caredove Referral Inbox. You have the client's name, contact information, and the reason for referral—everything you need to take the next step. Referrals from Ocean also include a special tag, so you know exactly where this referral came from.

- Send the client an automated invitation to book their first intake appointment.

Do I need both Ocean and Caredove?

- Ocean helps primary care providers send referrals.

They work together, but you don’t need to log into Ocean to action any Ocean referrals.
Is it really free to receive referrals?
Yes. Community agencies can:
- Receive unlimited referrals in Caredove at no cost using Caredove Essentials

- Receive referrals from Ocean (when part of a participating network)
Optional advanced features and integrations are available if needed.
What types of referrals can I receive in Caredove?
Caredove is designed to handle all referral sources, not just Ocean:
- Primary care (via Ocean)
- Website referrals and self-referrals
- Phone inquiries (logged by staff)
- Partner agency referrals
- Walk-ins or internal intake

How does Caredove fit with the Ontario eReferral initiative?
IWe partner with Ocean and Amplify Health to ensure that community agencies can receive referrals from hospitals, primary care and specialists who use Ocean to send referrals.
Ontario organizations that provide senior support services, mental health support, and children’s development services can use Caredove as their referral inbox, and we make sure your services show up within the Ontario eReferral Ocean healthmap.
Even if you’re not a Health Information Custodian (HIC), you can use Caredove to receive referrals from Ocean.
We already have our own Ocean site. How do we integrate that to Caredove?
Great! We can use your existing Ocean site and integrate directly with your Caredove service listings. This gives you full control over your Ocean configurations and forms that will flow into Caredove.
What does an Ocean referral look like in Caredove?
It looks like a normal referral in Caredove, with a bit of extra information. Just like all your other website or partner referrals, you’ll receive:
- client name and contact info
- reason for referral
But Ocean referrals include a special tag in the “From” column, showing it came from Ocean.
From there, your process is exactly the same as any other referral.
What if the referral from Ocean is missing information?
If the referral from Ocean only includes basic details, your team can:
- follow up with the clinician via phone
- collect the rest of the information during the client’s intake call or appointment
Will the referring clinician in Ocean know what happened with the referral?
Yes! When you update the referral in Caredove (like booking an appointment or updating the referral outcome), that information is sent back to Ocean so the referring clinician can see what’s happening.
You can also message the referring clinician!
- You can send updates/messages from Caredove → Ocean
- But clinicians can’t reply back from within the Ocean platform
Can we send referrals from Caredove to services in Ocean?
No. The Caredove & Ocean integration supports sending referrals from Ocean and receiving them in Caredove. The integration does not support sending referrals from Caredove to be received in Ocean.
Do we need technical setup or IT support?
No. The integration is designed to be straightforward:
- Caredove handles the connection with Ocean
- Your team gets support during onboarding
- No complex IT setup is required for basic use
Do we have to be part of a network (like an OHT)?
